The California Public Utilities Commission

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is reminding consumers that in these tough economic times, it pays to take advantage of the CPUC’s California LifeLine Telephone Program, which provides basic home phone service to eligible
California households for less than 25 cents a day.

How to Enroll in California LifeLine: Signing up for California LifeLine is easy. Consumers should call their local telephone company directly and request to enroll in the California LifeLine Telephone Program. Consumers can also call toll-free at 1-866-272-0349 for more information about the enrollment process and the program.

After speaking to the telephone company, an enrollment form in a pink envelope will be sent in the mail.
Consumers should be sure to fill out and return the
enrollment form by the due date.

How to Qualify for California LifeLine? Method #1 – Program-Based Eligibility Consumers can qualify for California LifeLine if they or another person in their household are enrolled in any one of the following public-assistance programs:

• Medicaid/Medi-Cal • Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) • Federal Public Housing Assistance or Section 8  • Healthy Families Category A• Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Welfare-to-Work (WTW) • National School Lunch’s FREE Lunch Program (NSL) • Greater Avenues for Independence (GAIN)

• Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance Head Start Income Eligible (Tribal Only) •Food Stamps or Supplemental  •Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) • Tribal TANF • California Work Opportunity • Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) • Stanislaus County Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (StanWORKs)

Method #2 – Income-Based Eligibility —Consumers can qualify for California LifeLine if their total household income is at or less than these income maximums:
Household Size                                   Maximum Annual Income    (effective 06/01/08 to 05/31/09)
1-2 members                                        $22,900
3 members                                           $26,900
4 members                                           $32,400
Each additional member Add $5,500

Documentation is required proving that their total household income is at or below the income maximum for their household size
